How it works

A minimal pair consists of two words that are identical except for one phoneme (distinct unit of sound) in the same position. For example, "pat" and "bat" differ only in the initial consonant (/p/ vs /b/).

  • Phoneme contrast: select two sounds that you want to compare. The tool searches its built-in word list for pairs that differ only in that sound.
  • Position filter: narrow results to pairs where the contrast occurs at the beginning (initial), middle (medial), or end (final) of the word.
  • Speech therapy: minimal pairs are widely used to help clients distinguish and produce target sounds by highlighting meaningful contrasts.
  • Language learning: practicing minimal pairs improves perception and production of difficult sound distinctions in a new language.
  • Client-side: all processing runs entirely in your browser — no data is sent to any server.
